The Sahara is the kind of place that returns you to scale. There is so much sky, so much silence, that the things you brought with you become smaller in a useful way.

The desert nights

We camp in proper tents — no luxury pretensions, but warm, well-built shelters. Each evening we gather around a fire while local Berber families share food and recite poetry that has been passed down for generations.

Movement and rest

Mornings: short camel rides or walks across the dunes. Afternoons: rest in shaded camps, naps, books. Evenings: gathering, food, stars.
